Association of Boston Urban Priests is established.
1967
The group is founded by a group of younger priests in the Catholic archdiocese of Boston in the wake of the Roxbury riots. Its purpose is to make Catholicism more relevant for inner city residents. The group quickly endorses the candidacy of Thomas Atkins for City Council and subsequently criticizes the archdiocese for not doing to address discrimination, poverty and to do more to oppose U.S. involvement in Vietnam and proposed highway construction in Boston. A similar group, the Association of Urban Sisters (AUS) is formed in 1968.
